While we don’t recommend it, if you want to stay up to date on the news of the world while enjoying your stay in Sochi, you can do that. Many hotels offer international television stations such as the BBC or CNN, just check with the concierge before making your reservation.

Current Weather

The weather in Sochi is not the Russian stereotype that you think it is. Unless of course you think of Russia as having an inviting subtropical climate that hardly ever allows the temperature to dip below freezing except on one or two of the coldest winter nights each year. So unless that is your stereotype of Russia’s weather, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Getting Around

Unless you plan to stay in your hotel room once you get to Sochi, you are going to have to figure out how to get around. Luckily there are plenty of options. Sochi public transportation boasts an elaborate bus system and the soon to be completed Sochi Light Metro. Additionally several private bus companies supplement the public system and taxis, walking, and biking all offer viable alternatives to public transit in Central Sochi.

Local Shopping

Sochi is home to several mid and large malls and another mall, MoreMall, is currently under construction. Once it is complete, it will be Sochi’s largest shopping center. In addition to its malls Sochi is, like any large city, home to many independent shops selling everything from souvenirs to locally produced teas and wines. And be sure to stop by Sochi’s outdoor market for the local flavor of both the food and the people.

Safety & Security

Krasnodar Krai, the region of Russia that Sochi is located within, is known as one of the safest in southern Russia. However, as with all travel, some precautions should be taken when you’re in an unfamiliar place. The most prominent danger is the pickpockets and scam artists that are synonymous with resort towns worldwide.

Local Customs

Being a resort city Sochi is used to a wide array of travelers and foreigners who have their own customs, habits, taboos, and ways of being. That being said, it is still a good idea to try to familiarize yourself with some local etiquette, taboos, and customs so you can be sure you don’t do anything that might offend or upset some of the residents of a city that has opened its doors to the world.
